This Is Spinal Tap is a 1984 American mockumentary film directed by Rob Reiner and starring Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer.

The film tells the story of “Spinal Tap”, a fictional British heavy metal band, and their disastrous US tour.

The film satirizes the often exaggerated reports of bands’ behind-the-scenes activities and portrays the group as they try to deal with the fact that their popularity is going down.

Guest, McKean, and Shearer wrote their dialogue based on their characters; Reiner directed, co-wrote the story, and edited the film.

The three main actors are credited as playing themselves, but all the characters they portray are fictional.

At the 1984 Cannes Film Festival, The movie received a 10-minute standing ovation when it was screened. It was released in both the US and the UK on March 2, 1985, and October 26, 1984, respectively.

The film stars James Caan, Kathy Bates, Lauren Bacall, Richard Farnsworth, and Frances Sternhagen, about a novelist who is kidnapped by a fan.

The story follows Paul Sheldon (Caan), a novelist who is rescued from a car crash by Annie Wilkes (Bates), his “number one fan.”

When she learns that he has killed Misery Chastain—the heroine of her favorite book series—in his latest novel, Misery’s Child, she forces him to write a new novel, bringing Misery back to life.

As Paul works on the manuscript, Annie grows increasingly unstable, and he realizes that she plans to keep him imprisoned forever.

Desperate to escape, Paul twists the story of Misery’s Child to make Annie its villain, Misery Chastain. When Annie reads the new novel, Misery, Chastain kills Paul in a rage.

Rob Reiner directed Misery from a screenplay written by William Goldman, based on Stephen King’s 1987 novel Misery.
