On November 2, 1944, Michael Buffer was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.

His parents were nineteen when they married and had him. Shortly after, his father enlisted in the United States Navy for World War II.

When he was only 11 months old, his parents divorced, and he was left in the care of foster parents – a school bus driver and a housewife. He grew up in Roslyn, Pennsylvania.

It wasn’t such a tragic story…

Michael Buffer had a “perfectly magical postwar, middle-class suburban American upbringing.”

He had a good relationship with his foster parents, but they never legally adopted him, so he stayed as Michael Buffer, even if he was raised as Michael Huber.

He frequently saw his birth mother as a young boy, and they had a good relationship, too.

It all took a turn…

When his birth mother wanted to live with him when he was 13, neither he nor his foster parents wanted it, but they had no choice.

But after a few months, Buffer couldn’t take it and moved back to his home with his foster parents.

Eventually, Buffer and his birth mother fell out of touch.

Like his biological father…

Buffer enlisted in the United States Army, although it was for the Vietnam War at the time. He served from 1965-1968.

Michael Buffer High School

The legendary announcer attended Abington High School.

Hold on to your seat…

We’re about to dive into the details of Michael Buffer’s career. What pushed him to be a ring announcer? How did he come up with his catchphrase? Where else did he work?

We’re excited to share the answers to those questions with you!

Michael Buffer Career

After Michael Buffer finished serving the army, he worked as a car salesman.

But it didn’t work out, so…

Michael Buffer – with his handsome looks – started his modeling career when he was 32 years old. He modeled for TV commercials, print, and underwear advertisements, working for two to three days for three-four hours.

This is how he decided to be a ring announcer…

Because of his modeling schedule, he had a lot of time to watch Top Rank Boxing on ESPN.

Then one time, when he was 38 years old, he was watching one of the matches with his son Michael Patrick, and the announcer on TV poorly delivered the result of the split decision by announcing the winner’s two cards first.

His son told him that he could do a better job at hosting ceremonies.

Soon after…

He started sending his resume to hotels hosting fights in Atlantic City, East Coast’s boxing mecca of that era. He hoped that there’d be one who’s looking for a “James Bond” type of person.

In 1982, he got his first opportunity thanks to The Playboy Hotel & Casino’s then-director of entertainment and special events, Toby Berlin.

Michael Buffer’s ring announcer debut was on USA Tuesday Night Fights on the USA Network. He said he was nervous and that it was terrible.

The turning point of him not being nervous hosting was during the June 1983 sold-out match between Roberto Duran and Davey Moore in Madison Square Garden, where Muhammad Ali was present.

And speaking of Muhammad Ali…

It was thanks to Ali’s line, “I’m so pretty. I’m ready to rumble. Rumble, young man, rumble!” that inspired Buffer’s five famous words, “Let’s get ready to rumble!”

Before that, though…

He tried “fasten your seatbelts,” “batten down the hatches,” and “man your battle stations” to try to energize the crowd.

Michael Buffer didn’t waste time…

He saw the success of his line and proceeded to obtain a trademark for it in the mid-80s. He officially got its federal trademark in 1992.

Did you know…?

Michael Buffer earns between $25,000 to $100,000 whenever he delivers his line? He even received $1 million on some extremely rare occasions!

So, where did he use his announcing skills?

He was the announcer for all the boxing matches promoted by Top Rank on ESPN starting in 1983.

Buffer was the exclusive ring announcer for all the matches in casinos owned by Donald Trump.

Before it became defunct in 2001, World Championship Wrestling also had Buffer as their exclusive ring announcer for the main events like wrestling matches featuring Hulk Hogan or other top WCW talent.

After World Championship Wrestling folded, he started to be a ring announcer for other wrestling promotions.

He worked as the lead announcer for Time Warner’s pay-per-view matches.

Buffer also signed with DAZN to be their only ring announcer for all their boxing broadcasts.

He was the announcer for the YouTube boxing match between Logan Paul and KSI.

Not only that…

He became an announcer for the Stanley Cup Finals, NBA Finals, the occasional MLB World Series, and NFL playoff games.

He’s a guest announcer at the 2017 US Grand Prix.

In 2018, he also worked for the Affliction: Banned Mixed Martial Arts show.

And wait, there’s more…

He signed licensing deals for Ready 2 Rumble BoxingandReady 2 Rumble Boxing Round 2 for PlayStation 2, Dreamcast, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo 64.

After the game was a huge success, Midway reportedly paid Buffer $100 million for his phrase.

He’s got a deal with Sega Genesis for Greatest Heavyweight of the Ring,” too.

He tweaked the phrase for certain advertisements, too, as with Mega Millions, Kraft Cheese, and Progressive Insurance.

Just a few more…

Michael Buffer also had TV and film appearances, and here are some of them:
