John Cameron Fogerty was born to Lucile Fogerty and Galen Robert Fogerty on  May 28, 1945. He grew up in El Cerrito in California, USA, with his four brothers Tom, Jim, Dan, and Bob Fogerty.

John’s father is a Californian Linotype operator for the Berkeley Gazette, and his mom is a teacher for grade 2 students.

In his early life as a student, John attended a strict Catholic school, The School of the Madeleine. He reported it was so strict that he even often wet his pants and was asked to sit on his wet bottoms because he wasn’t allowed to go to the bathroom during classes.

Life was rough for John…

After a year, he switched schools. John’s parents were both alcoholics, and when he was in around fourth grade, they had a divorce.

John Fogerty High School

John continued to switch schools a couple more times before moving up.

He attended El Cerrito High School and little did he know this is where he’ll meet other future members of Creedence Clearwater Revival.

John had no ill records as a student. He began taking up guitar lessons while studying until he eventually started his own band. John joined Blue Velvets together with bassist Stu Cook and drummer Doug Clifford.

But did you know…

John Fogerty joined the army before taking up a career in music with his band. During the Vietnam War in 1966, he received a draft notice for military service. After being chosen, John went to a United States Army Reserve recruiter and signed up as a supply clerk. He served and completed training for a year and was discharged after.

John went back to join his band. And this said band later signed under Fantasy Records as the Creedence Clearwater Revival.

John Fogerty Career

Creedence Clearwater Revival Career (1968 to 1972)

John began his music career after leaving the military. In 1968, John Fogerty joined Creedence Clearwater Revival with his brother Tom and two other band members. They released their first single, Susie Q, and it caused quite a stir for its profanity.

Other hits of the rock and roll band include Bayou Country, Bad Moon Rising, Have You Ever Seen the Rain, and  Run Through the Jungle.

Although they’ve released a couple of singles, they didn’t blow up. The band decided to only stay together for a couple of years. They created their final album, Mardis Gras, before splitting up.

In total, Creedence Clearwater Revival hаd nine top-ten singles and eight gold albums.

It was John who served as the heart of the conflict. John Fogerty voiced out, saying he should hold the greater creative control of the band because he’s not just lead singer, Fogerty wrote the songs as the principal songwriter, and he’s also a lead guitarist.

Solo Career (1973 – Present)

In 1973, John decided to go solo and go by the new name, The Blue Ridge Rangers. He worked under Fantasy Records and released songs including Today I Started Loving You Again, Workin’ on a Building, Have Thine Own Way, Lord, Please Help Me, I’m Falling, I Ain’t Never, and  Hearts of Stone.

In 1985, he released his first solo album with Warner Brothers Records titled Centerfield. The album included titles like The Old Man Down the Road, I Can’t Help Myself, Rock and Roll Girls, Zanz Kant Danz, and Searchlight.

After some time, John went on another hiatus from the music industry.

John Fogerty returned once again to the mainstream in 1997 and released Blue Moon Swamp. The album became one of his most successful ones yet, even winning a Grammy Award for The Best Rock Album.

John achieved many accolades in his successful solo career, including Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 1997, BMA Pop Icon Awards in 2010, Orville H. Gibson Guitar Awards – Best Rock Guitarist in 1999. He was also inducted into the 1993 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1993), 2005 Songwriters Hall of Fame, and 1998 Hollywood Walk of Fame.

John Fogerty performed a sold-out show with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl in 2009, and he’s appeared in the 25th Anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concert at Madison Square Garden.

John continued to release albums, including Deja Vu All Over Again and Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again, which became critically acclaimed and garnered Grammy nominations and recognitions.

John Fogerty is part of the 100 Biggest Artists and Guitarists, according to Rolling Stone Magazine.

During the lockdown, John performed remotely with his family under Fogerty’s Factory. They were featured in The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Sirius XM’s Classic Vinyl station, and NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts.

John published an autobiography titled Fortunate Son in 2015.

John Fogerty Controversies

Fogerty vs Fogerty (1960s – 1990)

John Fogerty grew distant with the members of the band he broke up with, the Creedence Clearwater Revival. And this included his own brother Thomas “Tom” Fogerty.

Tom and the two other members of the Creedence Clearwater Revival took the company record’s side when it came down to the dispute about their royalties. The band’s manager, Saul Zaents, swindled the band out of millions of dollars and even attempted to sue John.

In 1990, at the age of 48, Tom Fogerty passed away due to complications from HIV/ AIDS. John revealed that he and his brother weren’t on speaking terms up to the time of his last days.

On Tom’s eulogy, John said,” We wanted to grow up and be musicians. I guess we achieved half of that: becoming rock ‘n roll stars. We didn’t necessarily grow up.

John Fogerty vs. Fantasy Records (1988)

Fantasy Records sued John Fogerty for “self-plagiarising” his own songs. (Okay, I didn’t even know this was possible.) The company claimed that the song John wrote, An Old Man Down the Road, sounded too similar to Run Through the Jungle, which they own.

But fortunately, John Fogerty won this case.

So what does John Fogerty do with his colossal net worth? He invests it in real estate.

John Fogerty buys properties, renovates them, and then after a while, he cashes out on them. He even puts some of them up for up to  $5,400 monthly rent.

Los Angeles Mansion – $8.997 Million

The rock and roll musician’s latest property is a 9,000-square-foot Southern California mansion. It features six bedrooms and eight bathrooms.

Inside, the mansion has an expansive master suite, fireplaces, a luminous kitchen, a bar, multiple living rooms (because why just have one living room, am I right?), and an in-house movie theatre.

The swimming pool lights up when the sun sets, and there’s an outdoor fireplace giving off luxury vacation feels. On its roof deck, you can get a picturesque view of the Encino/ San Fernando Valley.

John Fogerty Philanthropy

As a veteran himself, John has a soft spot for his fellow military members.

John Fogerty donated $25,000 to the Veterans Village. Veterans Village is a self-sustaining transitional environment built for the veterans of the armed forces, and they held a ceremony which Fogerty was a part of.

His donation is to help in the expansion of the village. The funds were from the canceled Woodstock 50 event that John was supposed to play in. John was paid in advance and all the artists, so John decided to dedicate it for a charitable donation.

Top 3 Quotes From John Fogerty

  • Being a teenager has to be the toughest time for almost everyone. Especially if there’s anything, you perceive as wrong in your world. I felt put-upon, unworthy. Behind the eight ball. Divorce was an immense failure to me.”
  • “I’m just made differently. Man, I just love being an American, I love my country. But it happened to me during the Nixon time, especially pre-Watergate, that as I watched Nixon for the first time in my life I felt ashamed. I had to analyze myself. What is this emotion? I realized that my government was separate from my country. It was the first time I ever felt ashamed of the government, not the country.”
  • “As a songwriter, I try not to be sloppy; same with the music. You can be very lean, very efficient, so you’re not wasting a lot of time getting to the point. You’re saying it with as pure a word or phrase as you can. That’s the part that was craft. You refine and refine and refine. Maybe that’s why the songs still hang on, because they’re very pure. For one thing, they’re very short. “Bad Moon Rising” is like 2 minutes and 12 seconds. I would try to do everything as quickly and with as little extra as possible. It was a challenge”
