Not everyone achieves a level of greatness that warrants comparison to your idol.

Well, professional American golfer Michelle Sung Wie did.

Her powerful swing, reminiscent of her idol and golfing legend Ernie “The Big Easy” Els early on his career, has earned her the nickname “The Big Wiesy”, a play on his moniker.

At the young age of 10, she had already shown a lot of potential for greatness when she qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links, the youngest player to do so at that time.

Michelle Wie won the prestigious Jennie K. Wilson Women’s Invitational and Hawaii State Women’s Stroke Play Championship the following year, showing further promise.

She continued breaking records when, at the age of 13, she was the youngest player to qualify for an LPGA event.

In addition to that…

In 2003, she carded a 66 in the third round of that year’s Kraft Nabisco Championship, her first major event, becoming the youngest person to make an LPGA cut.

In that year’s Women’s Amateur Public Links tournament, her victory made her not only the youngest female but also the youngest person ever to win an adult USGA Amateur Championship event.

Not impressed yet?

In the same year, she made the world take notice when she became the youngest person to make the cut in the U.S. Women’s Open, at the age of 13.

One of the greatest golf players in history, Arnold Palmer, said about her, “She’s probably going to influence the golfing scene as much as Tiger, or more. She’s going to attract people that even Tiger didn’t attract, young people, both boys and girls, and families.”

The following year, Michelle Wie became an inspiration for young girls everywhere when she competed in a men’s event. After being given a sponsor’s exemption, she played at the Sony Open, and in the process, became the female youngest player to play a PGA Tour event… and ended up beating 46 male players!

Yes, a 14-year-old girl did that…

PGA player Tom Lehman, so impressed with her, commented, “Her golf swing is perfect. Her poise is unbelievable. Either you’ve got it or you don’t. And this girl’s got it.”

No arguments with that…

Michelle Wie continued her winning streak in 2005, competing in the prestigious Curtis Cup tournament, then became the first female golf player to qualify for USGA National Championship, commonly an event for men.

Later that year, Michelle Wie announced that she’s turning professional, while signing a reported $10-million sponsorship deal with Nike and Sony.

Because she was underage at that time, she wasn’t yet qualified to join the LPGA Tour and was only able to compete in a few LPGA Tour events.

Her first event as a professional golfer was the Samsung World Championship, where she got disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard.

Nevertheless…

She went on to tally four top 5 finishes on the LPGA Tour that year. She was also ranked number 3 in the Rolex World Golf Rankings but dropped at number 7 later that year due to a limited schedule.

The year 2006 was full of ups and downs for Michelle Wie’s career.

She competed in a lot of men’s events, including the PGA Tour Sony Open and the SK Telecom Open where she was the second female player to make the cut on the Asian Tour.

It was, however, a disappointing season for her.

2007 wasn’t any better…

Earlier that year, she suffered a fractured wrist and had to take a 4-month hiatus.

Her comeback resulted in a lot of misses and disqualifications, and controversial withdrawals. Surprisingly, she was still ranked number 4 by Forbes in their Top 20 Earners Under 25 that year.

Things started to look better for our golf heroine after she passed the LPGA Qualifying School in late 2008 and finally became a full-time member of the LPGA Tour the following year.

Michelle Wie played her first tournament as an LPGA member at the SBS Open at Turtle Bay.

She further proved that she’s back in winning form after winning her first LPGA victory and first professional individual tournament at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Mexico, an elite limited field  event on the LPGA Tour, where only the top 36 female golfers, based on their rankings in the LPGA Money List and Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings, get to compete.

2014 was another big year for Michelle Wie.

She started off the year by winning her third LPGA Tour event, the LPGA Lotte Championship, which was also her first in the United States.

And then came her first major title.

In June that year, Michelle Wie won the U.S. Women’s Open, her fourth LPGA Tour event, and her first major championship.

She finished off a great year by finishing second in the Kraft Nabisco Championship, being awarded the Rolex Annika Major Award, and being included in ESPNW’s Impact 25 list.

Sadly…

It was followed by a series of lackluster seasons, which involved a lot of injuries…

…Until…

Michelle Wie won her first major victory since the U.S. Women’s Open when she won the 2018 HSBC Women’s World Championship.

Unfortunately…

She had to withdraw from the 2019 HSBC Women’s World Championship due to chronic injury.

In an Instagram post, she stated that she and her doctor have decided that she should take some time off and that her health and recovery were her priorities.

Michelle Wie got married that same year and gave birth to a baby girl the following year.

She admitted, “I thought there was no chance of coming back,” but her husband encouraged her to continue.

Funnily enough…

The reason why she decided to return to competitive golf was that she got mad over an objectifying comment made by the former New York mayor  Rudolph W. Giuliani! Hah!

Her other reason, she said, is that she would love for her daughter to see her play on the LPGA Tour someday.

Aww…
