Joel Thomas Zimmerman was born to Rodney Thomas Zimmerman and visual artist Nancy Johnson on January 5, 1981. He was raised alongside two siblings, Jennifer and Chris. As a child, he received piano lessons, but his interest in music was further sparked when he was a teenager after receiving a keyboard as a gift for Christmas.
Around the late 90s, Joel was chatting with a friend using his computer when his computer malfunctioned, and he smelled a terrible odor like burning wires. He went to investigate and found a dead mouse inside his computer. After telling his friends about the n=incident, he became known among them as the “dead mouse guy.” He then intended to use the name “Deadmouse” on an internet chat room but had to shorten it to “Deadmau5” because of the character limit.
Right after graduating from Westlane Secondary School in Niagara Falls, he worked as an online music licensing company programmer.
After adopting the name Deadmau5, he started his music career in 2005 with the release of his debut studio album, “Get Scraped.” It was followed by the self-released compilation albums “Deadmau5 Circa 1998 – 2002”, “A Little Oblique,” and “Project 56”.
He released his second studio album, “Vexillology,” through Play Records before forming his own record label called Mau5trap in 2007.
2008 saw the release of his third studio album, “Random Album Title,” which featured the tracks “Faxing Berlin” and “I Remember,” a collaboration between him and American DJ and producer Kaskade.
In the same year, the single “Move For Me,” another collaboration with Kaskade, was released. It topped Billboard magazine’s Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart, catapulting Deadmau5 to mainstream popularity.
The following year, his album “For Lack of a Better Name” was released. The album featured the songs “Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff” featuring Australian-British musician Rob Swire and “Strobe,” two of the songs that Deadmau5 is best known for. He was also named the house DJ and PUSH Artist of the Week at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, where he performed with Travie McCoy and Jason Derulo.
In 2010, he released “4 x 4 = 12”, his fifth studio album. It featured several collaborations such as “Raise Your Weapon” with Greta Svabo Bech, “Animal Rights” with Wolfgang Gartner, and “Sofi Needs a Ladder” with SOFI. The album was nominated for Grammy Awards Best Dance/Electronica.
Two years later, his follow-up “Album Title Goes Here” was released. The album was notable for the tracks “Telemiscommunications” featuring Imogen Heap, “The Veldt” featuring Chris James, “Channel 42” featuring Wolfgang Gartner, and “Professional Griefers” featuring Gerard Way, which was one of FUSE TV’s top 40 songs of 2012.
After many years with Ultra Records, he parted ways with the record label and signed with Astralwerks. He then announced the release of his first album with the label, to be called “While(1<2)”.
In 2015, he appeared as a headlining act at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival and at the Reading and Leeds Festivals. He also left Astralwerks and decided to release his music independently through Mau5trap.
Later that year, it was speculated that he would leave the music industry after he deleted both his Facebook and Twitter accounts. However, he later apologized to his fans, saying he had to take a break because of depression but would come back the following year.
After almost two years, he released a digital single called “Snowcone,” followed by the studio album “W:/2016Album/”.
He has released more albums such as the compilation album titled “Stuff I Used To Do,” “Where’s the Drop?”, “Mau5ville: Level 1”, “Polar (Music From the Netflix Film),” which was his first original soundtrack album, “Mau5ville: Level 2”, and “Mau5ville: Level 3”.
