He first worked for the Big Time Wrestling promotion before being hired to join the Pacific Northwest Wrestling promotion. During his time there, he created the character of an effeminate wrestler, whom he named “Pretty Boy” Pat Patterson.

After his tenure with PNW, in which he won the NWA Pacific Northwest Heavyweight Championship, he was recruited by Big Time Wrestling (San Francisco) promotion’s Roy Shire. He dyed his hair blond and partnered with Ray Stevens to form the tag team The Blond Bombers, which will later be considered by many as the best tag team of the 1970s.

As Lord Patrick Patterson, he won both the NWA North American Heavyweight Championship and NWA Brass Knuckles Championship in 1968. He won another tag team championship in 1972, this time with Rocky Johnson as his partner.

Pat Patterson next wrestled for Championship Wrestling for Florida promotion, where he also served as a booker. Under the Championship Wrestling for Florida promotion, he won the NWA Florida Television Championship and NWA Tag Team Championship.

Joining the American Wrestling Association in 1978, Pat Patterson once again partnered with Ray Stevens, and as The Blond Bombers, they won the AWA World Tag Team Championship. He also fought for Lutte Internationale promotion and New Japan Pro-Wrestling during his Japan tour.

Pat Patterson made his debut in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1979. Later that year, he became the first WWF Intercontinental Champion. From 1980-1983, he did commentary with Vince McMahon in “WWF Championship Wrestling”.

Following his final match in 1987, he remained active in the wrestling world, working various backstage jobs such as being road agent and right-hand man to WWF’s Vince McMahon and being an in-ring referee. He also created the Royal Rumble Match.

After working there for many years, Pat Patterson retired from WWF, now called World Wrestling Entertainment or WWE, in 2004. The following year, he came back to WWE and worked as a creative consultant. He was also one of the regular cast members of the WWE Network reality TV show, “WWE Legends’ House”.
