The US government abandoned Manhattan Island in 1988 due to rising criminality, which was converted into a walled-off maximum-security jail.
Air Force One crashed inside the jail during a hijacking attempt in 1997, and U.S. Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) takes President Robert Killsome (Donald Pleasence) captive.
The President’s assistant, Commissioner of Prisons Francis Xavier “The Duke” Wayne (Isaac Hayes) gives Plissken two days to rescue the President in exchange for his release.
To ensure Plissken’s compliance, Plissken’s carotid arteries have micro explosives implanted in them. They will detonate if he tries to escape or remove them.
Plissken locates the President in an abandoned theater.
But…
The Duke’s men thwart his escape attempt. The President explains that he planned the hijacking to get out of prison and offers Plissken a full pardon if he can rescue him within 22 hours.
The film was Carpenter’s second big-budget production following the success of Halloween (1978).
Escape from New York was released in the United Kingdom on July 10, 1981.
It grossed $25 million at the box office and was nominated for three Academy Awards.
Escape from New York is a cult classic for a reason.

When Luke finds out that his sister will be evicted from her apartment, he comes up with a plan to save her.
He will buy a bunch of used cars and sell them for a profit. Rudy finds out about Luke’s plan and tries to stop him.
The two of them end up in a big battle to see who can sell the most cars.
In the end, Used Cars is a pretty funny movie, and it’s also a pretty good lesson in how not to get taken advantage of when buying a used car!
Used Cars won a few awards when it came out. Moreover, it was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy Film.

Used Cars was based on a real-life used car salesman named Ron Levin.
Levin was arrested in 1979 for selling cars with fake titles and odometers that had been rolled back.
