Scandals & Controversies

Jessica Seinfeld vs. Missy Chase Lapine (2007)

On January 7, 2007, HarperCollins published Seinfeld’s first novel, Deceptively Delicious, which featured a series of recipes to conceal pureed fruits and vegetables in children’s meals.

But here’s the rub!

After her book’s release, another author of a cookbook named Missy Chase Lapine accused her of intellectual infringement.

Missy then sued Jerry with defamation when he insulted her and called her names after his appearance on Late Show with David Letterman.

The case arose from a legal dispute in which Lapine accused Jessica of copying her idea for a book about helping kids eat nutritious food. That same year, both women had their books published.

The Sneaky Chef: Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in kid’s Favorite Meals was Lapine’s work. Simultaneously, Jessica’s book was entitled Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food.

The case became a gossip starter, and Jerry presented it with a heap of scorn on The Letterman Show.

Jessica resisted the claims her book was a result of her kitchen trial and error. She said she had only come up with the idea of trying to get her children to eat nutritious food. She also said the idea of pureeing veggies had been around for many years.

And you know what the good news is?

Judge Laura Taylor Swain of the District Court dismissed the case against Jessica in 2009 but left open the defamation suit against her husband – to be tried in the State Court of New York.

The federal judge ruled Jessica’s book as not a copycat and that there’s nothing original about hiding vegetable purees in children’s meals.
