Moon River (2018)

Along with appearances and collaborations with ASAP Rocky and other artists, Ocean debuted his rendition of Audrey Hepburn’s ‘Moon River.’

Grand Theft Auto V (2017)

Lending his voice and songs to the game GTA V, Ocean hosted his own radio station, Blonded Los Santos 97.8 FM.

Blonded Radio (2017)

Ocean continued releasing his songs on his own radio show, Blonded Radio, under Apple’s Beats 1.

Also, in the same year…

DJ and producer Calvin Harris released his song ‘Slide’ featuring Ocean and Migos, the hip hop trio. 

The song was certified by the RIAA as double platinum. And then it peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40, which was a first for Ocean.

And to top it off…

He won the NME Award for Best International Male Artist.

Blonde (2016)

After keeping fans waiting…

Ocean released his second album ‘Blonde.’ It debuted at number one in the USA, UK, and other countries.

But instead of promoting his music, Frank went on vacation to France, China, and Japan.

He didn’t need to, anyway.

Because…

Time named it the best album on its 2016 year-end list. Then ultimately, ‘Blonde’ was certified platinum by the RIAA on July 9, 2018.

Boys Don’t Cry (2016)

Also, on August 20, 2016…

Ocean sold his magazine Boys Don’t Cry in pop-up shops in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, and London.

Endless (2016)

In 2014…

Billboard reported that Ocean was working on his second album. They mentioned many music industry peers, including Pharell Williams, Tyler, the Creator, and others.

After a series of release announcements and delays surrounding his supposed second album ‘Memrise,’ – Ocean’s fans were left hanging by empty promises.

After that…

News and teasers about an album called ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ circulated. Even Ocean’s brother, Ryan, was in on the social media promotions.

On August 1, 2016 – instead of an album – a live stream shot sponsored by Apple Music surfaced on boysdontcry.co. Ocean was seen woodworking and playing various instrumental songs on loop under negative lighting.

The rumor was…

It was a teaser to his visual album ‘Endless,’ and it would be 140 hours long.

Ocean released the album through the live stream, where Apple Music provided a link directed to a project called ‘Endless.’ It was the end of his contract with Def Jam.

You’re Not Dead Tour (2013)

Ocean embarked on a fourteen-date European and Canadian tour.

Afterward…

He was set to perform on August 4, 2013 – the first night of the OVO Fest. But to the disappointment of his fans, he couldn’t make it because of a vocal cord injury.

Later that year, Ocean was featured in ‘Wildfire’ by John Mayer from the album ‘Paradise Valley.’

Channel Orange (2012)

Ocean was still writing for other artists. 

The song he wrote for Bridget Kelly’s debut studio album, ‘Thinkin Bout You,’ was leaked in June 2011.

Still, he made it the lead single of his debut album ‘Channel Orange.’ The album was released under Def Jam Records and was positively received by the public.

In fact…

‘Channel Orange’ was named best album of the year by HMV’s Poll of Polls. It debuted second on the Billboard 200. 

And then it earned six Grammy nominations! Two of which he won, including Best Urban Contemporary Album.

And on January 30, 2013, ‘Channel Orange’ was certified gold by the RIAA.

In the same year…

Frank bagged the Brit Award for International Male Solo Artist. 

Nostalgia, Ultra (2011)

Ocean released his self-produced mixtape, ‘Nostalgia, Ultra,’ for free download on February 16, 2011.

Then he started gaining attention.

Rolling Stone called him a ‘gifted avant-R&B smoothie.’ and Andrew Noz was quoted saying that his writing was ‘smart and subtle’ and that it ‘[set] him apart from the pack.’

In April of the same year, Ocean clarified that there were no hard feelings between him and Def Jam after his first mixtape. They even made plans of re-releasing it as an EP under the label, but it never happened.

Maybe because…

Frank Ocean was already doing great!

His single ‘Novocane’ even peaked at 82nd on the US Billboard Hot 100.

He was also featured in Odd Future member Tyler, The Creator’s ‘She’ music video. Then he co-wrote and was featured on a Kanye West and Jay-Z collaborative album ‘Watch the Throne.’ Specifically, the tracks ‘No Church in the Wild’ and ‘Made in America.’

Meanwhile…

He was performing with Odd Future on their first US east coast tour. Ocean’s first appearance was at the 2011 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Then Ocean appeared on magazine covers, starting with The Fader. 

Def Jam Records (2009)

Ocean met record producer Tricky Stewart in late 2009.

With his help, Frank was able to sign a contract with Def Jam Records. But success wasn’t with him just yet.

Feeling neglected by the label… 

… Ocean started recording his mixtape on his own.

Odd Future (2009)

Frank then joined the hip hop group Odd Future in 2009. He became close to one of the members of the group, Tyler, The Creator.

The said friend helped rekindle Ocean’s fire for songwriting.

Ghost Writing (2006)

Ocean used to be a ghostwriter for famous artists like Justin Bieber, John Legend, Brandy, etc.

But even before that…

Again, he worked odd jobs to support himself before he got a songwriting deal for famous musicians. 

And now, he’s named as one of the world’s most influential people!
