Cool guy Bear Grylls was actually born Edward Michael Grylls. He was adorably nicknamed “Bear” by his older sister when he was still a toddler.

Now that he’s a man of the jungle and mountains, that nickname sounds much like a foreshadowing, doesn’t it?

You would most probably know about this British adventurer, writer, and TV personality – unless of course if you’re living under a rock.

Bear has been making headlines since the 1990s by doing unthinkable adventurous feats that include climbing up unclimbable peaks, rowing a boat naked (yes, naked!), and having dinner on the clouds.

That and his explosive TV series.

In case you still can’t believe it, Bear’s extremely adventurous nature was actually formed way before he was even famous.

Born on June 7, 1974, the future British pride grew up in a very well-off family. 

As a matter of fact… 

… he’d even gone to school Princes William and Harry did.

Bear Grylls was already an exceptional young man while he was still a student. Having gone to Eaton House, Ludgrove School, and Eton College, he made a name by mastering several sports disciplines as well as languages.

He actually helped start Eton College’s first mountaineering club all the while earning a Black Dan belt in Shotokan Karate. 

Oh, and he’s also starting to do skydiving then.

How can you beat that?

At around 20 years old, Grylls Bear started serving the British Army reserves with 21 SAS as a trooper trained in combat survival, demolitions, close-quarter fighting, climbing, explosives, parachuting, and winter warfare.

Phew, that’s a lot!

It was all fun and games – at least until tragedy struck him to the core.

His childhood dream was almost shattered when Grylls was sent to military rehabilitation at Headley Court, UK, after a freak freefall parachuting accident in Southern Africa.

Bear Grylls broke his spine in 3 places.

Yikes!

But that didn’t stop him. On the contrary, it only gave him stronger will power that he’ll carry throughout his life.

Now we’re nearing the best part…

Just months after being told to not being able to ever walk again, Bear Grylls pushed himself into his rehabilitation and the next thing people knew, he was climbing one of Himalaya’s highest peaks.

It was the peak that Edmund Hillary once called unclimbable.

Yeah, right! It’s not like Bear Grylls is unstoppable!

Grylls was only 23 years old then, and he was one of the youngest men to ever climb Mount Everest at the time. 

Evidently…

… Bear loves doing services to his country. In 2004, he was appointed honorary lieutenant commander in the Royal Naval Reserve.

In 2013, he was also appointed honorary lieutenant colonel in the Royal Marines Reserve.

More and more adrenaline-fueled acts were done mostly along with Bear’s friends. 

But you know what’s amazing?

Most of these adventurous acts were for a cause.

In 2000, Bear circumnavigated the British isles and rowed a boat naked to raise funds for his friend who had lost a leg in a climbing accident.

Yes, you read that right!

Bear had also crossed the Atlantic, climbed one of the remotest peaks in Antarctica, and had the longest indoor freefall…

… all for a cause.

Perhaps the most memorable of all these was when Bear organized the highest open-air formal dinner party ever.

It was done under a hot air balloon at 7,600 meters up along with Lieutenant Commander Alan Veal. 

Finally…

… Gryll’s name became prominent enough for Discovery Channel to approach him and ask him to host a series of wilderness adventures.

It was the famous Man vs Wild reality show – Born Survivor in other countries.

And that was the start of his skyrocketing fame.

Apparently, people were loving the adrenaline rush this Bear host was giving. Aside from Man vs Wild, Discovery Channel had also commissioned another TV series for him named Worst Case Scenario.

But, the best is yet to come.

Aside from being a television presenter, Bear Grylls was also appointed chief scout to the United Kingdom Scout Association, making him the youngest ever chief scout ever.

Bear Grylls is not only a television presenter and host. He’s also a bestselling writer with 12 books under his belt. 

In case you’re wondering…

… Bear met his future wife, Shara Cannings Knight, in the most unromantic of circumstances. 

He was then training for Mount Everest when waves on the beach took his clothes away. Suffice to say, he met Shara when he was literally naked. 

Being a charitable person, Bear is a patron of several charities, often doing his exhibitions for a cause.
